About June Smith

I am an ethicist and lawyer by profession. Since my professional and academic appointments have focused on integrity frameworks for industry and professions, including codes of practice, professional standards and business ethics in the investments and financial advice sector. An important part of my current role as Deputy Chief Ombudsman is helping to improve relationships between financial services providers and their clients, particularly by developing capacity to reach fair and consistent outcomes when disputes arise. I work to promote people’s right to access fair dispute resolution process in financial services. I believe in promises made and promises kept. Effective, efficient and timely dispute resolution facilitates confidence and trust in the financial services sector. These are the cornerstones of my approach. In addition to my current role as Deputy Chief Ombudsman I am an Executive Committee member Australian New Zealand Ombudsman Association, a Tribunal Member at the National Sports Tribunal and the Victorian Racing Tribunal, Deputy Chair of the Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board and an Adjunct Professor at the Victoria University College of Law and Justice I hold a PhD in Law from Victoria University, specialising in professional and business ethics and organisational decision–making within financial services organisations. I have a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Melbourne. I am a Graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an Adjunct Fellow of the College of Law, Victoria University External appointments have also included Independent Chair, Conduct Review Commission, Financial Planning Association of Australia; Independent Chair, Advisory Member, Member Compliance Committee, Financial and Consumer Rights Council of Victoria; Member, Racing Victoria Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board; Member, Human Research Ethics Committee, Victorian Department of Health; Chair of the Code Compliance Committee Australian Travel Agents Association and Victoria University Alumni Ambassador.
