About Justin Ray

I started working in Psychiatry as a Neuro-Psychiatric Technician 28 years ago and haven't stopped. I've been a Psychiatric NP since 2011 and have worked almost every setting which includes Community Mental Health with the Hampton/Newport News Community Services Board, the correctional system and in Maryland at a Medicaid agency. My involvement in Community Mental Health has given me significant experience with the Seriously Mentally Ill and Substance Use Disorders. I have also worked inpatient dual diagnosis and inpatient acute Psychiatry. I built the Consult Liaison Team at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and worked out of the Emergency Room for over a year seeing all emergent patients and other services consults. I have experience in locums work and have done 2 successful assignments. I'm an affiliate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Frontier, Walden University, Ohio State and East Kentucky University. I've had the opportunity to do a lot of teaching in regards to Psychiatry. I've given lectures and presentations on a variety of topics to include a recent presentation on Bipolar Disorder for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and was a panel member on the challenges of Mental Health during COVID for the American Academy of Clinical Pharmacologists. In essence, I've had the opportunity to experience the wide breadth of Psychiatry. I consider myself a Generalist and as am well versed in the treatment of Depression as I am ADHD or the wide variety of Mood or Psychotic Disorders. I currently work on the ACT Team for the City of Chesapeake and own my own private practice, South Chesapeake Psychiatry.
