Background
About Kabir Sheikh
At UCL, I do health policy and systems research (HPSR) that generates insights and solutions for health systems problems in LMICs. I also teach postgraduate students about health systems across the world, and how changes in health systems can be understood and managed. I also co-chair the NIHR’s Global Health Policy and Systems Research committee. Prior to joining UCL (2023-), I was Policy Advisor at the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, World Health Organization (2018-2023), where I led policy, science, and country engagement with a footprint in 40 countries. Before that, I was Director for Research and Policy at the Public Health Foundation of India (2008-2017) and Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Earlier employers include Delhi University, DfID, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). I have served successive terms as elected Board Chair (2016-18) and Vice Chair (2014-16) of Health Systems Global. I was a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Scholar (2011), a Lancet Commissioner on Migration and Health, Asian Century Visiting Fellow at the University of Melbourne (2014), and Expert Resident in health policy and systems research at the Universities of Cape Town and the Western Cape (2014-15). I have served in advisory roles to WHO, the MRC UK, the DHSC UK, the European Commission, UNICEF, the Wellcome Trust, USAID, FCDO, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and several country and state governments. I have written more than 100 papers, and edited three books on health systems and policy. I hold honorary professorships at LSHTM, PHFI, the University of Melbourne, and BRAC University, and serve on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Health Policy and Planning, Social Science and Medicine, and BMJ Global Health. My first degree is in medicine (Delhi University), and I have a Master’s in public health and a PhD in health policy, both from the LSHTM.
