About Kai Chapman

My overall goal in becoming an Engineer is bringing my creative side into contact with my techinical side, so that I may build things to better people's lives. I have a keen ability to identify weakness/places for improvement, and create more effcient ways to design/build/create. I am currently studying at Santa Monica College and am looking to expand my skill set via a summer internship. Over the course of my career as an artist, I was constantly coming up with ideas, and now with my engineering training, I am beginning to bring them to life. My first invention which I have been prototyping for the last 18 months in currently in patent pending, and on the verge of manufacturing. Over the course of process I learned Solidworks(CAD), FDM 3D Printing, and various methods in enhancing manufactuability. I also have volunteered with an organization called Grid Alternatives, at which our main goal was to install solar arrays on private residences. Through this I learned not only about the science behind photovoltaic cells, but also the techinical knowhow of attaching them to roof structures. My current skillset is unique in that I have worked on both the artistic end, as well as the techinical. I find that many of the problems we face as engineers require "outside the box" solutions. My years as an artist allow me to think in ways that may not be conventional by engineering standards, but may serve the solution to the given problem.
