About Kai Hoshijo

My work and commitment, like our moku in Hawai 'i is surrounded by the ocean. I work closely with Hawai'is nearshore and coastal ecosystems, specializing with loko i 'a or Hawaiian Fishponds in Niu and Kuli'ou'ou Ahupua'a. I am on the project management team with the Hawai'i Coral Reef Initiative, learning important skills from an amazing team, currently working on wetland protection and restoration. I split time working as a community partner with the Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center as a community outreach and restoration specialist. I am also a volunteer crew member and student of navigation with the Polynesian Voyaging Society. I am a proud 2022 graduate of the Master's of Environmental Management program at UH Manoa. With funding as a Hau'oli Mau Loa Foundation Fellowship recipient, my research resulted in a collection of Konohiki nearshore fishing law and practices in Niu Ahupua 'a. I am a former Emerging Indigenous Leaders Fellow for Conservation International, finishing a project of gathering stories of Maunalua Bay community members and fishers. I received my B.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from UH Manoa. I am also the the owner of Ho'omau Ceramics - specializing in ceramic art and teaching.
