About Kaija Saranto

Kaija Saranto, PhD, RN, FACMI, FAAN, FIAHSI. Currently, I am the President to the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. From to 2023 I was the full Professor in Health and Human Services Informatics, at the Department of Health and Social Management, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus. I am also the former Deputy Director at the Finnish Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care, an affiliated Centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute established in 2010. In 2013 I acted as the first professor in patient safety for the new Research Center for Comparative Effectiveness and Patient Safety (RECEPS) in Finland. I have served as the nursing informatics expert at the National Development Project for the Adoption of the National Electronic Record System in Finland 2004-2009, vice chair for the national expert group for Nursing Documentation 2010- 2016, and Patient Safety Research 2012 - 2015. I am the past president of the Finnish Health Informatics Association under the IMIA, the past chair of the Acendio Standardization Committee and the past president of the Acendio. I was the co-chair of the SPC for the MedInfo 2015, the IMIA Vice President for MedInfo 2017 and the vice chair of scientific committee for NI 2018. I was the vice chair of the IMIA-SIGNI and my responsibility area was working groups 2014-2021. I was nominated as the chair of EFMI WG for Education in 2018 and I served as the International Taskforce Liaison for HIMSS TIGER Committee 2018-2020. My research interest is the role of terminology in electronic information systems as well as educational and organizational issues in information system implementation. My research focuses on patient safety and implementation of digital services in health and social care. Until 2023 I acted as the PI for the research project focusing on shared decision making (Proshade) funded by the Strategic Research Council.
