They say that first impressions are lasting impressions. This is especially important for an organization who is trying to attract, hire and retain the best possible candidates. Many studies show that a positive hiring and onboarding process is an important first step to retention. If that first impression makes your company look organized and welcoming, the employee – depending on which survey you read – is anywhere from 50% to 70% more likely to stay with the organization. Very few people take a new job with a plan to quit. Employees start with hope for their future. It has been my responsibility for the last three years to help nurture their positive feelings about the decision they made to join the Navy. When I moved into the talent acquisition team for the Navy, I saw that the process for our division was not standardized. Once I took on the support role, overseeing the candidate experience for 10 different talent acquisition team members, our retention went from 70% to 98%. There was a direct correlation between the standardized process, the constant communication and follow up and the clear expectations as I managed as many as 110 candidates at all stages of their recruiting process.
