About Kaitlyn Lawrence

I am currently enrolled in Rhode Island School of Design's M.A. in Art and Design Education where I am learning and implementing various teaching philosophies into my own teaching artist experience. I am actively gaining valuable lesson-planning experience through my coursework and through my role as a teaching artist. In my teaching assistantship (and in an upcoming Spring internship), I design and teach processed based art lessons for young children. In the past, I have been the acting site coordinator at a YMCA branch, where I implemented art and other enrichment activities for young children. I was also an assistant preschool teacher during a YMCA summer program where I cared for toddlers-4y/o. I have also interned in the Youth and Families department in Massachusetts’s deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, where I developed and facilitated art programs for students of all ages! I believe that creating an environment where children to engage with materials in their own way fosters artistic development and contributes to personal growth as well. By encouraging artistic exploration and experimentation, educators can foster a nurturing and empowering environment for their students. Young children especially can learn essential skills like cultural sensitivity and empathetic awareness. It is the responsibility of the educator to facilitate an environment that nurtures healthy communication, collaboration with peers and an exposure to a diverse range of content. Following my graduation in June, I am looking to relocate and work full time as a teaching artist develop and facilitate art programs.
