About Kala Converse

Hi Everyone! I'm currently a Middle School teacher at KIPP. I've been teaching for 6 years now, and I must say I love what I do. I love building relationships with my students and families, being a stakeholder, creating a warm and safe space, allowing my students to completely be themselves, the amazing celebrations we get to do, and so many much more. However, I'm completing my last semester of graduate school at Texas Southern University, and I'm studying Clinical Mental Health. I’m seeking an opportunity outside of the classroom that would allow me to use the counseling experience I attained over the past 2 and a half years. I’m currently working with populations ranging from adolescents to adults experiencing depression, trauma, grief, as well as substance abuse. This opportunity will provide me to continue my clinical experience as well as be the jumpstart of my counseling career. Although I come from a musical background my graduate educational experience has prepared me well for an internship in the counseling field, but there’s still the hands on, clinical training I’m missing. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling track has required me to take courses such as, group counseling, counseling techniques, ethics, multicultural issues, psychopathology, and substance abuse/addiction. I’ve also been given the space to do many mock therapy sessions with volunteers. I’m currently in my last semester of interning where so after graduation I plan to take the NCE to obtain my LPC-A.
