About Kara Davis

Kara Davis danced for several ballet companies before moving to San Francisco in 1996 where she participated in the creation and performance of over forty original pieces of dance. She is a founding member of KUNST-STOFF and Janice Garrett & Dancers, both of whom she danced for ten years. She has performed works by Alex Ketley, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Amy Raymond, Val Caniparoli (ACT), Pearl Ubungen, Robert Moses, Mary Carbonara, and Kathleen Hermesdorf. Along with receiving numerous Isadora Duncan nominations for her ensemble work, she was awarded an "Izzie" in 2003 for "Outstanding Achievement in Individual Performance" and was Bay Area dance critic Rachel Howard's pick for 2005's MVP. In 2006 she co-founded project agora with Bliss Kohlmyer Dowman, a project-based organization committed to interdisciplinary research, dialogue, and public performances. Her choreography has been shown at the Bates Dance Festival, Edinborough Fringe Festival, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Kennedy Center (ACDF Nationals), Headlands Center for The Arts, SF MOMA, and Arizona State University. She has received support from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, CA$H Grant program and the Zellerbach Family Foundation."Terra Incognita Revisited", an evening-length collaboration with choreographers Alex Ketley, Katie Faulkner, Manuelito Biag won two Isadora Duncan awards in 2012 for “Best Choreography” and “Best Ensemble.” She has received commissions from sjDANCEco, Scottsdale Community College, Saint Mary's College, and San Jose State University. She has taught and choreographed at Alonzo King's LINES Ballet Pre-Professional & BFA programs since 2005. She has taught at UC Berkeley, Standford University, San Jose State University, Atlanta Ballet School, Cornish College, Mills College, ODC, the Guangdong Modern Dance Academy in Guang Zhou, China, and the Cairo Opera House in Cairo, Egypt. She received her MFA in Dance from Hollins University in 2013. She is currently teaches at University of San Francisco, and Dominican University.
