About Kara Sievel

Kara Sievel, Ed.D, is a Literacy Specialist at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Southington, Connecticut. For the past five years, Kara served on Southington’s district-wide SEL team in addition to leading Kennedy’s SEL committee and school-wide efforts. Kara received her B.A. in Special Education and Elementary Education from Providence College, her M.S. in Remedial Reading and Language Arts, her Sixth-Year in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University, and her Ed.D. from Sacred Heart University. Kara is a caring and passionate professional with 22 years of experience educating students and adults, writing curricula, coaching, and creating and facilitating professional development. She has benefited from numerous opportunities to continually strengthen her knowledge of the social and emotional learning needs of all individuals. She was a founding member of the Ana Grace Project and has attended Dan Siegel’s Mind Retreat at the Garrison Institute, as well as Mindful Leadership Summits, Wisdom 2.0, and Mindfulness in America conferences. Kara has also attended CARE for Teachers, was a two-year member of Yale’s Changemaker Fellowship Program, and received a Fund for Teachers grant in which she studied mindfulness and leadership in Bali, Indonesia. Recently, Kara was chosen as Southington’s 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year, and she was also named a 2021 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Semifinalist. Outside of work, Kara appreciates time spent with family and friends, traveling the world, being outdoors, reading, and learning.
