Background
About Karalee Surface
Trained as a historian, I have spent fifteen years in higher education. I am currently looking for a return to my storytelling roots. My years in academia have honed my research, writing, and editing skills both in the classroom and on my own projects. As an academic advisor, I learned to think fast, be adaptable to shifting demands and student crises, and be thorough in my commitment to solving any and all problems that arose in order to ensure student success. I am a quick learner with strong communication skills, a passion for narrative, and an innate sense of curiosity. I am a self-starter and have continually worked on developing new programming initiatives. As coordinator for the Institute for Women's Leadership, I developed a new conference series to expose students from diverse academic backgrounds to the possibilities that come from an entrepreneurial mindset. In my position as an Honors advisor at Marquette, I've also worked to grow our campus fellowship profile, cultivate community through the introduction of an Honors newsletter, and introduce a new flipped approach to the academic advising model. Additionally, I have embraced opportunities for collaborations across campus-coordinating, developing, and running both small-group and campus-wide workshops. Outside of the workplace, I am developing my editing skills through the University of Chicago Editing Certificate program, and have also joined the editing team of the Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies for a special issue focused on disability.
