About Karen Stefanyk

Karen is a professional biologist who has over 20 years of experience in the environmental field with work experience in research, government and consulting. She has consulted for ten of those years working in a variety of sectors including government, urban development, transportation, agriculture, oil and gas, and mining. Through her work, she has provided consultation and acted as a project manager, component and field lead for vegetation, wetlands and wildlife values including species at risk. She led the preparation of numerous technical reports that include the identification of terrestrial values, regulatory requirements and development of mitigation management strategies for her projects. Karen exhibits strong technical excellence in relation to vegetation, wetlands, and wildlife issues gained from her experience in the field. Her work has been throughout Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. She is an effective collaborator Her current career focus applies her background in a strategic policy context where her current focus is on applying the mitigation hierarchy through various scales of application; prioritizing ecosystem health and biodiversity across ministries and sectors; and continuing her learning journey to aid in healing our relationship to the land and to each other through her commitment to reconciliation on a personal and professional level.
