About Karin Holt

I have been in the field of education for the past 18 years, and completed my Bachelor of Education degree, from the University of Alberta, with an additional year in the Faculty of Arts with a major in History in 2004, and finally, received my Masters in Educational Leadership in 2012, from Concordia University, Portland, Oregon. In addition, to regular classroom instruction I have also held a number of additional leadership responsibilities in the field of education. These include: Division leader of the CAMP project for social studies, Alberta Teachers Association Representative, Inquiry lead teacher, Social Studies Department Head, coach and advisor for numerous school activities, such as, grad, sports, yearbook and overseas trips. In the same way, I have devised inquiry based learning programs in academic and advanced placement classes and being an inquiry lead teacher, I realize the positive benefits of learning by experiment and action for both students and teachers alike. This format makes education meaningful and the subject becomes considerably more relevant in the context of contemporary times. My lessons have included an emphasis on student - directed learning and I engage in curriculum enhancement through the use of technology, with an emphasis on constructivism and aiding students in expanding their world views. In addition, the technology I have endeavored to utilize has been with specific goals in mind, these being, to augment the function of school systems, prepare students for learning into the 21st century, to explore a deeper understanding of subject matter and to increase student achievement. I have also utilized my cognitive coaching certification, in various leadership roles with positive results. With the knowledge gained from my recent educational endeavours, I hope to test and develop new strategies and programs, in a variety of educational settings, that will improve the mentoring of both students and teachers alike.
