Karla currently is an external affairs and media relations specialist for Cigna and its partner affiliates (Evernorth, Express Scripts, Accredo, etc.) to help communicate the company's mission of making healthcare affordable, predictable and simple. Most recently, Karla partnered with Golin, a global progressive public relations agency, to support the agency’s healthcare practice, supplying teams with senior-level strategic communications counsel and project/campaign implementation. At Aetna, she was the lead external communications strategic counselor for PESO communication channels across all lines of Aetna business in 25 states to elevate the company’s reputation, boost its brand, support business growth and demonstrate its commitment to keeping people healthy as it is to providing treatment when they’re sick. Prior to joining Aetna, Karla managed an independent consultancy offering senior level business communications counsel and implementation on pharmaceutical and biotech client projects with AbbVie, 23andMe, Harmony Biosciences and others. Before that, she was a Vice President/Group Manager for Edelman, leading work with pharmaceutical and bioscience clients including Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Otsuka-Lundbeck, Astra Zeneca’s diabetes portfolio, Medtronic, Inc, Cancer Treatment Centers of America and Pfizer women’s health. Prior to joining Edelman, Karla worked with Medtronic, Inc. to launch a national program to arm people living with bradycardia on how to have an informed conversation about their available treatment options, including the only pacemaker that's safe for use during an MRI. At GolinHarris, on the corporate team, she managed a team for Dow Chemical, Inc, a global leader in the chemical industry that combines the power of chemical science and technology with the “Human Element” to advance human progress. In healthcare, Karla led external communications for Auxilium Pharmaceuticals of the first and only nonsurgical treatment for Dupuytren’s contracture, a disabling hand disease, as well as Cord Blood Registry, a leader in private cord blood stem cell processing and cryopreservation, for families who choose to preserve a child’s genetically-related stem cells for transplantation and regenerative medicine. She has earned several industry awards on behalf of her work with Medtronic and Cord Blood Registry, including a Skyline award, a Golden Trumpet and the industry-coveted Silver Anvil award (twice!) in the category of healthcare marketing.
