Background

About Karma Lowe

I have been working in higher education at an Ivy League university for more than 17 years, with most of my career spent in Student Affairs and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. I am the inaugural Dean of DEI for the Columbia School of Social Work, and have been developing and coordinating ongoing trainings for faculty, staff and students to address implicit bias, microaggressions, anti-Black racism, civil engagement and navigating difficult dialogues in the classroom, to name a few. I also serve on a range of university-wide committees, including one on Inclusive Public Safety, where we are interrogating and re-imagining the role, training and operations of public safety on campus. Prior to working in higher education, I was a print journalist in southeast Texas, where I earned a number of Texas Associated Press Managing Editors awards. The writing and editing skills I honed in my nearly 7 years as a reporter and editor have served me quite well in my professional life.
