Background

About Karolina B.

With healthcare rapidly changing, it’s more important than ever that clinical operations and services focus on the fact that data collection is an important aspect of driving quality and safety. Without data, you won’t know what the problem is, which means you need two things: 1) an easy mechanism to facilitate and then analyze data collection, and 2) a psychologically safe environment. A Harvard- and Princeton-trained forward thinker, my work in the Dept. of Anesthesiology and working under the CQO at Boston Medical Center dramatically increased the numbers of adverse event reports and improved the safety culture. I know what it takes to push the envelope on quality and safety that not only makes patient care safer, but also achieves measurable results in saving hospitals millions of dollars per annum. Highlights include: • As Director, Quality & Safety — Dept. of Anesthesiology at Boston Medical Center, I established the quality and safety regimen, driving initiatives that elevated healthcare delivery, improved patient outcomes and saved the hospital millions of dollars annually by preventing adverse events. • I coined the term “unanticipated anesthesia events” and after securing C-suite buy-in, I developed unique platforms to collect data on both adverse and unanticipated events. Data analysis led to quality improvement initiatives that have made patient care measurably safer. • I created a unique safety dashboard, fostering safety culture and increasing clinicians’ willingness to report safety concerns. • As Medical Director working directly under the CQO, I led IT sepsis upgrades including the implementation of an AI sepsis cognitive computing model, improving CMS SEP-1 Bundle compliance, reducing mortality and length of stay, and saving the hospital millions. • I serve as one of the youngest vice chairs of a national patient safety committee under the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). • Widely published, renowned, invited, and featured national and international speaker on topics of safety culture, and adverse and “unanticipated” anesthesia events, I’ve published and presented on my 30+ papers on safety topics. • With a visionary/pacesetter/democratic leadership style and an outstanding personal academic pedigree, I’ve prepared and mentored over 20 undergrads, medical students, research assistants, and anesthesia residents for success since 2021. I’m active on LinkedIn and would enjoy connecting with you. Please feel free to reach out to learn more about my safety, organizational performance, compliance, and quality achievements.
