Background
About Kata Stevens
My background is primarily in the craft of storytelling. I graduated from Fordham University in 2017. Since four years of higher education wasn't enough to satiate me, I went on to collect more student loans at Columbia Journalism School, graduating with my master's in Journalism in May 2020. At Columbia, I studied audio storytelling, sportswriting, and investigative journalism. I also wrote a thesis in which I explored how the sports industry has changed for women across the professional spectrum over the last 40ish years, from playing, coaching, and officiating to broadcasting and the world of sports media. The project effectively combined my two passions—sports and feminism—telling a story about a new generation of game-changers in an industry that has historically failed to give women the benefit of the doubt. While my first love was professional football, I’ve had the privilege of covering multiple sports in both audio and print, from the NBA to horse racing. I balance my job with freelance writing and my podcast, Under Further Review, which rides the line of sports and culture, discussing fandom and social issues with new guests almost every week. Similarly intended is my work at McClatchy, where I produce a narrative podcast anthology that conducts investigations into local sports stories with national social resonance. I also oversee McClatchy's network of local podcasts, which span across the company's 30 legacy newsrooms and verticles such as politics, food and crime. When I’m not creating, you can still find me in the stands as a fan, teaching podcasting classes at The PIT, binge-watching primetime soaps or running around the neighborhood with my charming and charismatic daughter, Joey, a mutt rescue who looks and acts more like a baby kangaroo, a hyena, a coyote, a dingo or a seal. Please continue to check back on my social media and my website, to see updates!
