About Katarina Westermark
As a Research Assistant at UCSB Smith Lab, I apply my skills in molecular biology to conduct experiments and analyze data. I have experience with CRISPR, PCR, plasmid cloning, and genomic sequencing, which I use to introduce deletions into genomic sequences and generate gene-edited plasmids. I also utilize R for data analysis of Ciona robusta phototaxis assay. In addition to my research work, I have developed strong organizational and communication skills through my role as a Teaching Assistant/Remedial Tutor at UC Santa Barbara, where I lead 20 students in hands-on laboratory experiments and demonstrate experiments for student comprehension. With these developing skills, I plan to pursue a PhD in molecular biology post undergrad. I am passionate about making scientific method and theory available for public dissemination, and advancing our understanding of molecular biology and its applications in human health. In terms of other interests, I’m excited about opportunities for AI to advance drug development and AI’s applications on patient-specific therapeutics and care. Looking forward to connecting!
