About Kate Black

As a passionate businesswoman and multidisciplinary researcher, I've dedicated my career to advancing the manufacturing industry through chemistry and collaboration. Building on a fruitful academic career, my industrial journey began with the co-founding of Meta Additive (2019), now part of the Desktop Metal family (2021), where we pioneered groundbreaking 3D printing processes for metals and ceramics, revolutionising industry capabilities and enabling mass-scale additive manufacturing. Driven by a commitment to diversity, I advocate for broader recruitment into STEM fields, recognising the need for fresh perspectives to unlock the full potential of advanced manufacturing. My initiatives include founding LivWISE to champion women in STEM and earning recognition as one of the "Top 50 Women in Engineering" by the Women’s Engineering Society and The Daily Telegraph 2018. Also as a Professor of Manufacturing at the University of Liverpool, I'm honored to shape the next generation of industry leaders. Now, as the founder and CEO of Atomik AM, we're pioneering agile manufacturing solutions for a sustainable future, recognised on the Tech Climbers list of 2024 for our contributions to companies that are shaping the Liverpool City region.
