About Kate Cason

My special interest in all things breathing and beating -cardiopulmonary has guided my choice to focus on work within the ICU setting with mainly cardio-thoracic cases. I currently work within a private hospital in London. Our Therapy department works as a collaborative team and with other departments (sleep/dietetics) to establish a holistic approach to patient management. On the ICU front, I attend ward rounds, M&M meetings and critical care governance meetings to ensure physiotherapy is apart of the decision processes and advocating for the profession. Responsibilities expand to MDT education/inservice sessions, competencies review, policy,pathway and quality service development. My passion to improve patients quality of life and breathing symptoms naturally exposes me to most respiratory and cardiac conditions. Breathlessness is complex and has many facets to its management which require a high level of clinical reasoning and evidence based practice to investigate the best approach to management with each patient as an individual. As a private physiotherapy practice owner in Cape Town, I conducted domiciliary visits independently and managed Locums to support the service. Focusing on respiratory conditions and critical illness rehabilitation. I completed my physiotherapy Masters degree with an interest in chronic lung disease and exercise capacity testing in community clinical settings. Previous clinical experience includes general MSK out-patient, aqua-therapy and Pilates based interventions. I am an enthusiastic, energetic individual with a good sense of humour, adding to team dynamics and encouraging the team. I am self-disciplined, determined and work to the best of my ability when I am passionate about my area of interest. I am privileged and grateful to be caring for individuals in their most vulnerable moments and am able to emotionally regulate myself and others to the situation at hand. I am an effective communication and thrive on close relationships with my patients and work colleagues; adding to my multi-disciplinary focus. My immediate career objective is to expand and upskill my practical cardiorespiratory experience. I am interested in improving patient journeys in the private sector who often don’t have the full team experience. I want to help establish pathways for access to best practice and ensure this is sustainable and consistent within our service. I am excited for the opportunities ahead and look forward to being apart of something bigger than myself and that will affect peoples lives for the better
