About Kate Evans

My work takes a holistic approach to conservation, with applied research and outreach initiatives to consider the social and ecological requirements of both elephants and the communities living alongside protected areas. With over 20 years of experience as a field biologist throughout Southern Africa on a variety of species, I have a solid understanding of the challenges of large mammal conservation, the complexities of resource competition and the importance of stakeholder relationships. My passion for wildlife started at a young age from my earthworm collection in my mother's prized Tupperware collection, saving frogs from pesticides and trying to take stray cats home with me, but it was elephants that captured my heart and my heart remains captivated to this day. The harsh reality is that not everyone feels the same way about elephants as I do, and to be an effective conservationist, I, of course, need to understand the standpoint of others and try to address their needs and concerns. Thus, diplomacy is a skill I put to use daily. Education is also a large part of what I do. I enable the Elephants for Africa Schools Education program in Botswana to continue through my fundraising activities and creating engaging content. I educate the public through lectures and talks, mentor students through undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and co-create online and in-person courses for students through career changers. As a zoologist, I am very aware of my limitations. Thus, the Elephants for Africa team loves to collaborate with other experts from a variety of fields.
