Background

About Kate Finlayson

I assist people and organisations to talk in a meaningful and persuasive way about what they're doing to change the world, by reframing debates, growing audience and connecting communities. As a communications professional who has worked in urban and remote Australia and Indonesia, I have used my skills in community development, adult education, journalism, production, project management, community engagement, communications, strategy, campaigning, content creation, crisis and issues management, brand management, event management, and media management to bring local voices into the debate, persuade naysayers, build profile, and share the love. I have worked for super organisations including Climate Energy Finance, IEEFA, ACOSS, ABC, Just Reinvest NSW, ABC International Projects, AusAID, USAID, Tangentyere Council, Tanami Network, Tangentyere Council, Socom Public Relations, Northern Territory Treasury, and Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT), and have assisted various super clients including Jabiru Town Council, Darwin City Council, Northern Territory Department of Education, and Top End Women's Legal Service. I have completed a number of significant research and engagement strategies for government and non-government as an independent consultant and employee, and have a Master in International and Community Development, coupled with post graduate qualifications in adult education and human resource development. I have very strong skills in negotiating media, communication and campaign outcomes for organisations and groups, and diverse experience gained in government, industry and the not-for-profit sector. I relish the challenge to pursue pragmatic outcomes in complex and sensitive areas. Finally, I wrote a critically acclaimed novel, ‘A lot of croc: An urban bush legend’, published by Vintage Press in 2003.
