About Kate Oconnor

I am a researcher, educator, and project manager with extensive experience in instructional design, mixed methods data analysis, with a focus on inclusivity and accessibility. My work focuses on the intersection of disability studies, reproductive justice, and the history of science and medicine, with a strong commitment to equitable education and ethical research practices. As a PhD candidate in American Culture at the University of Michigan, I was part of a federally funded research projects examining the history and impact of eugenics in Michigan, California, and other states. I lead the Michigan Eugenic Initiative as part of this larger project. I managed large-scale research databases, oversaw compliance with IRB and data use agreements, and mentored researchers in qualitative and quantitative methodologies. My research has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications, national conferences, and policy discussions on historical injustices and contemporary health equity. In addition to research, I have extensive experience in curriculum development and instructional design. As an instructor and graduate student mentor, I have designed and delivered accessible, inclusive learning experiences that center diversity, equity, and justice. I specialize in creating multimodal educational materials, facilitating workshops, and mentoring faculty and graduate students in best practices for inclusive teaching and community engagement. Beyond academia, I have worked with nonprofit organizations and university centers to develop accessibility initiatives, manage community partnerships, and implement data-driven program evaluations.
