About Katelyn Kendrigan

Through my work as a child care counselor, I learned skills in providing structure and support for children who are faced with serious emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges and learning disabilities. My co-workers and I, along with the children’s therapists, social workers, etc would work together to adapt a child’s treatment plan to best suit them and their needs. I would supervise and interact with children, at times taking smaller groups of children to participate in activities and would often play one-on-one or in small groups if the circumstances allowed. This job solidified my skills in adaptability, patience, listening and communication, flexibility, empathy, along with many other skills. For my undergraduate studies, I double majored in psychological sciences and human development and family sciences at the University of Connecticut. At this time, I have an overall GPA of 3.52 and for my major psychological sciences I have a 3.64 and for my other major, human development and family sciences, I have a GPA of 3.77 on a 4.0 scale. I have always been interested in counseling, as it would combine my interest in psychology with my desire to pursue a career that would help people. Working with this population has made me realize that I want to pursue counseling to help kids, such as the ones I work with, process their feelings and emotions in a safe environment while helping them develop healthy coping mechanisms and behaviors during the fragile period of childhood and adolescence.
