About Katelyn Mitchell

I currently hold a Diploma (2016) and Bachelor Degree (2018) in Occupational Health and Safety which was completed through Central Queensland University. During my studies I gained extensive knowledge of safety and risk practices. I have a proven ability in the delivery of safety and health initiatives and pride myself on my ability to support and create safety initiatives. I believe that I have good communication skills, am a fast learner and have the ability to strive for the best possible outcome. I can work in a team environment but also complete tasks independently. I took a Graduate Safety position with PYBAR Mining Services for 2019 which allowed my knowledge in mining grow. I was able to experience first hand underground mining - driving trucks, using explosives and general mine services. I completed the Graduate Program and became a Safety and Training Coordinator for a Queensland site. During this time I developed positive professional relationships with the client on site and operators. I completed tasks which included risk management, injury management and return to work, safety initiatives and toolboxes as well as ICAM investigations with general day to day safety entries. My time with PYBAR was anything but easy but it guided me into the safety professional I am today. In 2022 I decided to take a step across the country and start a role with Barminco as a Health and Safety Coordinator at a Western Australia site. So far within this role I have continued my positive and fun communication style during toolboxes / safety meetings, informative risk management processes while supporting Barminco’s Safety Principles. I firmly believe to ensure positive communication and listening - we shouldn't be speaking 'at' our workers. I've found a fun and quirky communication style has allowed workers to connect and interact with me during toolboxes and safety meetings. All people learn and interrupt things differently therefore I think it is important in our industry to get people talking about safety, their experiences and their interpretations of things all while having a bit of fun!
