About Katelyn Rivas

I am an avid scientific mystery solver and storyteller. During my time as a research scientist, I led projects designed to unravel the complex interactions between microbes and the immune system so we can better understand how to combat infectious diseases. I’ve used my time at the lab bench to not only learn new techniques, but to gain expertise in experimental design and analysis so I can use that knowledge to clearly and accurately explain science to others. I’ve honed my ability to communicate science research to other scientists by writing and publishing scientific manuscripts in peer reviewed journals and giving oral presentations and poster talks at multiple international conferences. To support aspiring scientists, I have mentored undergraduate and PhD rotation students in the lab, taught an undergraduate microbiology laboratory course, and volunteered as an advisor for K-12 students conducting hands-on science fair projects.
