About Kateryna Muts

My childhood hobbies prescribed my future: counting Christmas trees (as I was 5 years old), connecting parts of a model construction system using nuts and bolts, and teaching stuffed toys mathematics. At school, I became interested in programming and it inspired me to attend an IT academy after the school lessons. It was difficult to combine the academy with the school but I obtained vast knowledge about software development and my first programming skills. After finishing with honor my first master's study in pure mathematics, one of the most valuable experiences of my life happened: I got a scholarship for an international master's program “Mathematical Modeling in Engineering”. I spent an amazing time in Italy and Germany with people from all over the world studying optimization methods and their applications to model and optimize real-world problems, e.g, traffic flow, fluid dynamics, computer tomography, etc. This program gave an excellent knowledge of mathematical modeling and expanded my horizons through collaboration and teamwork with people from different backgrounds. Our world is endless and there is always something new to learn! After getting two master's degrees, I decided to move on and search for a Ph.D. topic in computer science that could combine my two biggest passions: mathematics and programming. After five productive years, I finished my work on a research project (the base for my Ph.D. thesis) that dealt with multiobjective optimizations for compilers of embedded systems. My years in research gave me excellent insights into software and technology and provided me with a great opportunity to apply my mathematical knowledge to optimize embedded applications in terms of the worst-case execution time, code size, and energy consumption. The research taught me to deal with uncertainties, think outside the box, and find motivation when nothing works as expected. My long study pass taught me to find a balance between quality and time frames. On the one hand, I always pay attention to small details to produce a high-quality product. On the other hand, I never let the grass grow under my feet in order to achieve a goal on time. My passionate curiosity has led me throughout my whole life and now, I am excited to pivot my career toward solving real-world industry problems. I believe my knowledge and experience in mathematics and computer science can make me a valuable member of a team.
