About Katherine Lauer

SUMMARY Over the course of my 36 years at Latham & Watkins, I advised public companies in healthcare and life sciences, drawing upon deep regulatory expertise and relationships with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the Department of Justice. I am currently considering appropriate board director opportunities that use skillsets developed as a counselor to boards of directors of substantial entities, including the likes of HCA, Sutter Health, and Tenet Healthcare. HEALTHCARE/LIFE SCIENCES PRACTICE LEADER As the global co-chair of Latham & Watkins’ Healthcare & Life Sciences practice for more than a decade, I built a team with broad industry expertise to facilitate our clients’ risk mitigation and business growth. I developed an array of long-standing healthcare industry clients, which I counseled on issues related to pharmaceutical and medical device marketing, the structure and formation of joint ventures, and other corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions. HEALTHCARE/REGULATORY SPECIALIST Having extensive experience with the federal Anti-kickback Statute, the Stark Laws, and the federal False Claims Act, as well as cost reporting and other reimbursement issues, I ensured my clients’ compliance with multiple, complex regulatory schemes. I also have particular experience in the design and implementation of compliance programs. I have structured and conducted many internal investigations, voluntary disclosures, and compliance audits, and negotiated and implemented corporate integrity agreements and DOJ Monitorships. BOARDROOM COUNSELOR/PARTICIPANT Regularly counseling boards of directors and senior executives, I collaborated to address clients’ existing and potential litigation and investigations, as well short and long-term strategic initiatives and policies. I spent over a decade on the Board of Trustees of Scripps Health, most recently as Chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee. LAW SCHOOL LECTURER I am currently lecturing at Willamette University Law School as part of its Health Law Certificate Program. Addressing the practical applications of the statutes and regulations on which I advised on a daily basis, I focus particularly on the enforcement of healthcare fraud and abuse. ENTREPRENEUR As a co-owner of Bryn Mawr Vineyards, a 40-acre estate in Salem, Oregon, I am taking a more active role in operations and business development experience, focusing on product quality, customer service, and our sustainability initiatives.
