About Kathryn Remlinger

My main goal in research and public outreach is to create awareness about language ideologies and their relationship to identity. Related to this goal is an aim to foster understanding about the role of language ideologies and linguistic discrimination in affecting language variation and change. My research interests are grounded in socio-cultural linguistics, including language ideologies, identity, the history and development of regional American Englishes, language variation and change, discursive constructions of place and identity, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, critical feminist linguistics, ethnography, and linguistic landscapes. My work has focused on gender and language in higher education, the relationship between language use and identity in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, as well as reflections of belonging, exclusion, and imagined communities in the linguistic landscapes of the Upper Peninsula and Holland, Michigan. As a Faculty Fellow in the Office of the Provost, I was co-leader of a campus-wide interdisciplinary initiative, Making Waves about Water, and collaborated with campus and community members to design and develop events, programs, and working groups. I was also appointed a Faculty Fellow position in the Office of the President and served on the President's Cabinet for one semester. I currently serves as president of the American Dialect Society and have served as program chair and associate editor of the society's journal, American Speech.
