ALGIX, LLC and its partners have developed biocomposites/bioplastics that have similar material properties as conventional plastics with the additional benefit of being biodegradable and derived from non-petroleum sources. We have developed resins that substitute at least 50% of the petroleum based resins for bio-based materials, and we have also made resins that are 100% bio-based by compounding our algal biomaterials with compostable resins, such as PLA made from starch. Through research collaboration with the University of Georgia and technical innovations licensed from Kimberly-Clark, we are currently in the process of developing new formulations and evaluating a variety of species of algae to produce novel bioplastic materials with a range of material properties.
