About Katrien King

I am a specialist in medicinal plant growth promotion and plant tissue culture. I have extensively studied microorganism associated with these plants. The metabolites involved in both medicinal plants and their bacteria are of great interest to me. My research focused on Rooibos, Cancer Bush (Sutherlandia frutescens), Aloe ferox and antimicrobial-producing actinobacteria. Molecular work, assay optimisation as well as bioinformatics analysis were part of my daily routine. Due to my immaculate attention to detail, problems could be solved swiftly as they arose. The conceptualisation of experiments was crucial in meeting the goals set out in my studies. I also enjoyed supervising younger students in the laboratory and offering guidance and helping them solve problems. Organization and time-management skills have enabled me to give attention to my studies as well as start and maintain a natural skincare side-business for extra income. I am very inquisitive and place a high value on continuous learning and strive to improve my skills wherever possible. I am passionate about using natural sources combined with scientific knowledge to help solve problems we face in our society.
