The Internet is uncharted territory for all of us."- Well. Almost. Frau Merkel may have reaped derision for this statement, but to a certain extent she was right: The Internet often lacks the transparency and reliability we are used to in the analogue world. Especially on social media platforms, users often cannot understand why, for example, a seemingly harmless tweet had to be deleted while a controversial video remains. And that leads to problems: How should one adhere to the rules of a platform if it is not clear at the outset which policy is used to implement them? How can you expect equal treatment if the policies are so vague that decisions differ depending on the moderator and the form of the day? After registering my second home on the Internet, I started to tackle this problem; initially only with smaller moderation tasks in forums, later with the support of the Teamspeak and gaming server of a subscriber YouTube. In 2017 I got the chance to dedicate myself professionally to this topic. As a content moderator at Arvato (Facebook/Instagram) I became a Subject Matter Expert and Team Coach after only 6 months. There I supervised a team of moderators for one and a half years; I reviewed the work, conducted follow-up training and generally acted as a contact person for any ambiguities in the policy. In addition, I collected feedback on the policy and the software tools used and forwarded it in a structured way to the responsible departments. In order not to take a detour via a service provider, I switched directly to TikTok and learned the value of reliable, clear policies and decision-making processes once again. Now I am looking for a way to increase my knowledge and apply my experience.
