About Katy Howarth

Professional Bio With over 10 years of experience in critical care nursing and a strong background in education, simulation, and organizational development, I am dedicated to improving healthcare systems through effective change management. I am a certified VHA Prosci Change Practitioner and a master trainer for VHA High Reliability Organization (HRO) and VHA National Center for Patient Safety initiatives, focusing on team-based and crew resource management. As the Resuscitation Education and Innovation Program Director for the VA National TeleCritical Care (TCC) program, I leverage telehealth technology to advance critical care best practices. I spearheaded the implementation of the VA TCC Champion Network, collaborating with more than 80 affiliated facilities to integrate simulation training into critical care. My work includes developing collaborative simulation training to promote standardized emergency preparedness in clinical practice and education, enhancing frontline staff confidence and competence in emergency response. I have created standardized processes for TCC simulation program, emphasizing learner-driven teaching models and safe clinical methods which align with the HRO's commitment to "Zero Harm." My overarching goal is to utilize advanced telehealth technology to enhance standardized practices, foster collaborative teamwork, and improved patient safety across the system.
