About Katy Sutherland

I hold an MSc in Data Analytics (with Distinction) and First Class BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science. I possess a diverse skill set in data analytics, statistical modelling, machine learning, problem solving and big data tools, with hands-on experience in R, Python, and various data analysis techniques. During my MSc I worked on a wide range of data science and analysis techniques including machine learning algorithms (regression, classification, ensemble learning) big data tools and techniques (including MySQL, MongoDB, and MapReduce), as well as spatial statistics using R. I also have experience in designing and implementing genetic algorithms to maximise returns and minimise risks in stock market portfolio optimisation. I have hands-on experience in data visualisation, predictive modelling, and machine learning techniques like SVM, random forests, and k-means clustering. I have applied these skills in real-world business settings during client case studies with industry-leading companies where I analysed complex datasets and presented actionable insights and business recommendations. In my previous Laboratory Scientist roles I have applied microbiological, haematological, and genomic testing techniques (including sequencing technologies such as Illumina and Sanger sequencing), as well as data analysis to support research. As a Process Supervisor at the Lighthouse Laboratory in Glasgow (LLiG), I focused on process optimisation, problem-solving, and department management, helping to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency in high-pressure environments like COVID-19 diagnostics. I am looking for a data analytics or data science role where I can apply my skills in machine learning, statistical modelling, and data-driven decision-making to solve real-world problems, optimise processes, and deliver impactful insights.
