About Kayla Roux

I currently work as a teaching assistant on the New Media courses at the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media studies as well as a full-time Masters' student at the school. I am also the website editor for local Grahamstown community newspaper Grocott's Mail. Before joining Rhodes University as a staff member, I also worked as a video and print journalist for Grocott's Mail alongside web editing duties. I have loved media research since I started my BA in 2010. I specialized in Television Journalism, but now that I have started an academically-oriented postgraduate degree I have immersed myself in the world of media research. I probably won't leave it for a long time. Although I value media studies as a field, I recognize its shortcomings and hope to marry practice and theory in all the things I do, just as I am doing now: theory enriches and informs practice, and practice sets and resets theoretical boundaries. I am an unwavering feminist and child of the digital age. I love community and alternative forms of journalism, and I've never been big on this whole 'objectivity' thing. I'm excited by developments in mobile technology and what they mean for media access, but I'm still an old-school paper-lover with a weakness for tabloids. In my free time (I still have some of that) I read a little, cook a lot, bake, draw and hike.
