At Spectrum Nutrition, my team of registered dietitians and I teach clients how to lose weight without all the gimmicky marketing, supplements, packaged food and fad diet rhetoric that accompanies most weight loss programs today. What I’ve learned through my experience as a dietitian and a weight loss counsellor at Spectrum Nutrition is that there is a LOT of guilt around food and eating, which is a shame because eating is not one of those things you can avoid – you’ve got to do it every day. And in my opinion, it should be fun! The internet is teeming with misinformation, anecdotal ‘evidence’, misguided advice and sales pitches (yes, even if they are from ‘doctors’) because after all, let’s not forget that selling weight loss is BIG business. The result is millions of confused people who don’t even know the basics of how to eat anymore, are not meeting their goals to lose weight, and are feeling guilty for every bite of food they take. I don’t know who coined the phrase “Stop the Insanity” – but my sentiments exactly! Food is something we have to contend with every day, it is part of our culture, our social lives and for goodness sake it is one of life’s greatest pleasures, so I’m on a mission to debunk the bunk. At Spectrum Nutrition, we aim to help people meet their weight loss goals, feel comfortable, confident and in control of the food choices they make and follow a ‘diet’ that fits them, not the other way around. The result? Easy, comfortable eating while you lose weight and a lifetime of effortless weight maintenance, now that’s more like it!
