Background
About Kelsey Oconnor
He uri tēnei nō Mokai patea nui tonu, Ngāti Hauiti, Ngāti Tamatereka, Ngāti Hinemanu, Ngāti Ruuanga, Inia. Tēnā koe, I'm Kelsey and I'm a Master of Art's (Psychology) student at Massey University. My thesis is an exploration of what it means to be wahine Māori in contemporary Aotearoa. I see this research as supporting wider efforts that resist the continued Othering of indigenous women of Aotearoa, and to shine a light on how wahine Māori self-define, and promote the diversity of our realities. I am the recipient of the Pae Tawhiti scholarship from Whakauae research as well as a bursar of the Te Rau Puawai scholarship program. Once I have completed my Master's, I'm hoping to further these studies and become a registered Clinical Psychologist. I am a mental health support worker at a crisis respite in Te Whanganui-a-Tara which is an acute alternative service for people experiencing crisis. 2024 also saw me studying full time at Te Wananga o Raukawa where I achieved the Heke Reo diploma, learning to be conversational in Te Reo Māori - a long time dream of mine.
