About Ken Helfing

I grew up in Los Angeles, CA, and was a paralegal for five years before deciding to go to law school. I've clerked for judges at the trial and appellate courts levels and enjoyed the insight and knowledge gained from that perspective. That all sounds great, but what is that really makes me different from the many who have also accomplished much of the same? While many attorneys may view themselves as “problem solvers”, I take a different approach. I’m not a problem solver. I am a “problem avoider.” Put the fire out before it even starts. But if a fight becomes necessary or unavoidable, then my motto is “fight hard, fight to win.” Winning, however, is indeed important, it is not everything. The individual needs of the client and the client's end-goal must always be considered. I believe in a more personal approach to practicing law where I get to know my clients, know their business models and know their individual goals. Whether it is a corporate or an estate plan, the right questions must be asked so that the true, underlying needs are understood and addressed. On a syndicated radio talk show some years back, I was interviewed about the Terri Schiavo saga. During that show, I received a compliment that to this day, is still one that I cherish. Keith Larson said to me, “You know, you’re the first lawyer I could actually understand.” That’s just how I like it. But my approach doesn't end there. I want more than just to be understood. My goal is to understand my clients. In business, that’s what matters most. On a personal level, I’m a pretty straightforward guy. I’m a competitor and outdoor enthusiast. I enjoy playing golf, competitive pistol matches, martial arts and scenario paintball. I’m an NRA Certified Instructor in multiple disciplines. But most of all, I enjoy the time spent with my two awesome boys.
