The Saskatchewan Protective Services MedalBackgroundIn 1985 the Province of Saskatchewan established the Saskatchewan Order of Merit as its first provincial honour to recognize a wide range of individual endeavour and excellence. In 1995 the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal was established as a decoration to recognize the volunteer sector.On September 11, 2002, the Premier announced the establishment of a medal to recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by safety and security personnel in Saskatchewan. In 2003 the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly amended the Provincial Emblems and Honours Act to create the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal. The Medal recognizes twenty five years of exemplary service by individuals in the public service sectors working in a direct capacity to ensure the security of Saskatchewan citizens.Nomination Criteria:Nominees must be personnel with 25 years of service in Saskatchewan and actively employed in one of the eligible agencies on or after January 1, 2003, who have law enforcement powers, or work in safety services and professions whose work is directly related to the safety, security and protection of people.Recipients include personnel from:Fire Services;Police Services;Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA);Citizenship and Immigration Canada;Emergency Medical Services;Canadian Forces;Parks Wardens;Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure's Traffic Officers;Federal and Provincial Corrections; andSheriffs, Deputy Sheriffs & Investigators, and Saskatchewan's Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Investigation Unit
