Trained broadly in modern history, military and naval sciences, I took my B.S. and my commission as a U.S. Marine Corps officer from the U.S. Naval Academy and, after initial assignments, earned the A.M. in History at Duke University, and the Ph.D. in Modern European History at the University of Maryland. I have studied, lived, served and taught in the US, Western Europe, Japan and the Middle East, and I have presented my work at conferences or invited lectures in the U.S, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Leading presses in the United States and the UK have published my work. I have considerable experience working with think tanks, analysts, study groups, decision teams and policy groups in defense and diplomatic issues. My TS clearance was renewed in 2012.
