About Kenneth Howe

Currently a freelance writer and editor, until recently I was co-managing editor at the San Francisco Examiner, helping to revive a legendary publication in the Bay Area. A few years ago, I returned to California after a decade as a financial journalist in China and Hong Kong, where my experience was wide-ranging: Founding managing editor at Caixin Global, an English-language platform for China’s independent financial magazine, Caixin; Asia editor at the Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones working on the relaunch of Market Talk – a running blog of the Asia’s financial markets; and Deputy editor of the South China Morning Post, where I was head of the night desk and production. After returning from China but before joining the Ex, I was a freelance journalist. I wrote a script for a documentary on the interaction of COVID and climate change and a book on the origins of high frequency trading. I also wrote for publications at Stanford University and UC Berkeley on a variety of topics, especially China and Hong Kong issues. As an editor I worked with the San Francisco Examiner and EdSource, an online education website. I was also a journalism instructor for the University of Hawaii. In addition, I've written a novel, The Black Kite, which takes place in San Francisco and Hong Kong. Before heading for Asia, I was business editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, where earlier I had been a finance and consumer reporter, as well as a member of the investigative team.
