About Kevin Abea

I am a first-generation SJSU alumnus with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a minor in Chemistry. My career goal is to become a neurosurgeon, specializing in neurotrauma and neurocritical care. I am currently in search of internships, volunteer opportunities, shadowing opportunities and research opportunities relevant to my career goal. Although science and the medical field has always interested me since childhood, I discovered my strong interest in neurosurgery as a career path midway through my years as an undergrad. I really enjoy learning about the anatomy and physiology of the brain and the rest of the nervous system! I graduated SJSU with a GPA of 3.548. However, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA during my last six semesters as a full-time/overtime student, have been awarded the President's Scholar Award six times in a row, and have been honored the Cum Laude award; all while commuting from Tracy to San José and during the quarantine. The courses I excelled in and really enjoyed were Principles of Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Fundamentals of Physics, and Neuroscience. Most of my professors/instructors from these courses have stated that I am an "all-star" student, receiving the highest score on some of the exams and receiving the top grade in some of the classes. I have become more familiar with healthcare and gained experience with patients throughout my career as an EMT and my time in Phlebotomy school. Through these experiences, I learned that I love working with patients, and that I am capable of working under pressure during emergent situations. Whether I’m dealing with patients that are desatting or transporting patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm, I always manage to keep my cool and do everything within my scope of practice to urgently treat/stabilize patients and get them the help they need. My past professors, peers, and coworkers would say that my strengths are being patient, a team leader, a problem-solver, detail-oriented, and having a good work ethic. My strategy is that I strive to understand new material conceptually rather than relying on memorization. All of these achievements are possible due to my love and interest in the natural sciences and learning!
