Background
About Kevin Backhouse
I am an incoming PhD researcher at Durham University, where I will be investigating how semantic context and reward shape what we consciously see, attend to, and remember, grounded in Active Inference and predictive processing frameworks. My route into academia has been non-traditional. I entered through Durham's Foundation Programme as a mature student, graduated with First Class Honours, and I am currently completing my MRes before starting my funded PhD in October 2026. Before academia, I spent years as Managing Director of an environmental consultancy, and I continue to volunteer as Lead Volunteer at Red Rose Recovery, a lived-experience addiction and mental health charity. I also lecture on Durham's Foundation Year programme, teaching quantitative research methods and supervising mini-dissertations.I am always happy to connect with others working on visual cognition, predictive processing, or reward-based attention.
