About Kevin Colleton

I come from very much an Accounting and business family background. Growing up, my father owned an accounting firm for 30+ years and six out of eight of my siblings, all had either accounting or business tertiary education pathways. It seemed natural to me that I would also move into a similar career pathway.I started my career in the 1990’s, which meant that I experienced the challenges of moving through the technology scope, as well as the introduction of GST and big changes in Capital Gains Tax and Trusts structure, etc. The challenge of continuous learning and professional development has been very real. The biggest learning curve for me, was becoming a Director in my own firm at 29 years old. This was a small practice that I acquired, and the training wheels came off very quickly. We had to develop policy, structure, set our own professional standards and build a team really fast. On reflection, I think, we did that really well and built a great business. This first venture was a big risk, I had a young family, at that stage two small children and a wife and we had to sink every single penny we had into the business and we had to make it work. I learnt really quickly what made for good business decisions and how and when the tough calls needed to be made. I believe that the people I’ve worked with, my clients, other professionals that I have been involved with, and being able to maintain the sense of family and community within the businesses, is what has made my career so rewarding to this point. In my down-time, I’m working on the development of an education platform for those new to business or looking to take the next step. I’m also the President of the Dolphins Football Club and am helping the club with a development project to improve their facilities and lighting. If I’m not in the office, at home, or the football fields, you’ll find me on the green, working on my golf handicap.
