About Kevin D Shield
As an epidemiologist and statistician, I have a strong interest in public health surveillance, and a background in pharmacology and toxicology (BMSc), epidemiology (MHSc), and medical science (PhD). Furthermore, my interdisciplinary skills in areas such as psychology, biology, econometrics, and clinical epidemiology enable me to examine public health surveillance through multiple research lenses, as well as to identify and study health disparities. My research focuses on the comparative risk assessment of non-communicable diseases, with a focus on the impact of alcohol consumption on mortality and morbidity. As a member of the WHO Global Steering Committee on Alcohol and Health, I have led several projects on alcohol consumption and harm trends. Specifically, I have been involved in measuring alcohol consumption and its related harms globally, investigating the causal link between alcohol and various non-communicable diseases, and analyzing econometrically the effects of alcohol taxation changes in low- to middle-income countries.
