About Kevin Lim

Hello my name is Kevin Ti Yen Lim, I am a new graduate student currently studying at the University of Manitoba. Ever since attending the University of Manitoba in Fall 2018, my skills as a young and aspiring biochemist grew exponentially. I learned to grow out of my shell through my participation in an undergraduate-led research group (Prairie International Genetically Engineered Machine; Prairie iGEM). I gained hands-on experience under a professional laboratory setting and learning the ins and outs of what it takes to be a researcher really opened my eyes for what awaits me in academics. During my first year as an iGEM member, I also worked part time at Montana's BBQ and Bar as a dishwasher to really push the limits of myself. Learning to work with others in a fast-paced kitchen setting and taking pride in one's work really complemented my academic side as a fellow iGEM member. The skills I learned in Prairie iGEM ranged from hard skills such as biochemistry and microbiology techniques to soft skills such as public speaking. Through my hard work, I had the unique privilege of presenting Prairie iGEM's research at the annual iGEM conference (Paris, France). While in iGEM, I had the unique opportunity to meet Prof. Wieden, an expert in the field of ribosome and biochemistry. Under his mentorship, I joined the Wieden lab in Summer 2023 as part of the Undergraduate Summer Research Awards program and continue to be apart of the group well into my Honour's project and now my M.Sc program.
