About Kevin MacPherson

There’s a well-known quote “every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets.” Many systems within our schools are working perfectly: they are designed to fail our BIPOC students and those with disabilities. I do not believe schools are beyond repair: the public education system can still serve as a fulcrum for a diverse, just, and democratic society.Throughout my childhood, I had a positive educational experience: I am a White, straight, cisgender male who grew up attending well-funded suburban schools. As a result, I often felt a deep sense of belonging and connection and was invested in my schooling. I continue to work in education with the driving question: shouldn’t our schools be designed for everyone -such as a Black female with a disability in a low-income neighborhood- not just for people like me?As a leader in education, I lead teams of folks to empathize, research, reimagine, and design experiences and systems within and around our schools. I am not perfect, but I continuously strive for results of meaningful change for folks on the margins: a more equitable, anti-racist, and accessible experience in our schools. I’m at my best when I get to collaborate and work alongside a diverse group of individuals, and we can leverage our strengths as a collective. Each day I do my best to be a good listener and provide (and receive) feedback, because it’s an opportunity for growth. When there’s a roadblock at work, it’s an opportunity to find a creative detour… or build a coalition of folks who pave a new road! Each day is an opportunity to learn something new; whether it’s research in a journal article, a YouTube tutorial, or taking the time to listen and reflect during a conversation. The training I received in my Ph.D. program allows me to look more critically at data, and I use the skills and methodologies as a flashlight to illuminate blindspots and re-adjust our plans as a team.My own research uses psychological nudges to improve student outcomes. I study other social-psychological phenomena such as stereotype threat, growth mindset, trust, and belonging. I ask, how might these variables and interventions be similar, or differ for students with disabilities in low-income and segregated K-12 schools? When I’m not working, you can usually find me hiking with my wife and dog. I was in several basketball leagues in Beaverton. Previously I played in the San Quentin prison league (check out Q-Ball on Netflix). I’m always looking to expand my professional network so feel free to reach out if you want to connect!
