Background
About Kevin Miklasz
I help Education and Edtech companies build out their data science and AI capabilities and strategies. I've repeatedly been the first data scientist hired at an organization, and enjoy creating order and structure out of the chaos of building out a new organizational unit. I've built out data teams, defined and built data infrastructure, identified and built measurements around kpis and OKR, and developed organizational data strategy and roadmaps around using machine learning and AI. I enjoy people and project management, and have led teams, projects and departments. I couple my data science skills with a complementary background in learning design, game design, learning impact research and product innovation to drive impact in the education industry. I'm also the author of the book Intrinsic Rewards in Games and Learning which describes how to make meaningful gamification systems. I have a workshop and set of design activities to guide educational and other companies in meaningful gamification design. Assessments are the current reward structures of education, and I'm a believer in the power of playful and embedded assessments, and the potential they have to unlock value in the educational system through data-driven innovations. If you've gotten this far, here's some technical details on my skills-I've used a variety of data science tools (R, python, SQL, Snowflake, Databricks, Looker for a few) and a variety of data science techniques spanning classic statistics to machine learning (ANOVAs, regressions, chi-squared tests, decision trees, clustering, bootstrapping, PCA, sequential pattern mining for a few) as well as a variety of game prototyping and design tools (GameMaker, Unity, ARIS, Cospaces for a few).
