About Kevin Perry

Associate Professor, public speaker [foredragsholder], moderator & ethnographer. To be updated soon. Qualitative research specialist with many years experience of face-to-face research and face-to-face youth work with young people in secure settings and on the street. Currently, my qualitative research focuses on 'inclusion'(inklusion) in Danish schools. The main focus involved capturing the perspectives of children and young people about what works (and doesn't) in relation to promoting class well-being and learning. PhD Research: Framing Trust at the Street Level. The data at the core of my PhD thesis were gathered through nine months of ethnography in and around two neighbourhoods in Denmark. The point of departure for this study was in observing face-to-face ‘encounter processes’ between frontline public sector employees and young men with minority ethnic backgrounds. The focus of the research was why young men with minority ethnic backgrounds trust some public sector employees and distrust others. The young men did not trust a group of detached youth (SSP) workers employed to undertake ‘crime prevention’ work in the neighbourhood – the young men considered these workers as the long arm of the law. In this case, the climate of distrust led to a failure in service delivery. However, there were a few trusted public sector employees which interestingly included a police officer.
